Torvald'S World

Written in the 1800s, Henrik Ibsens A Doll family is a play about the role of hands and women. During this time, men dominated both the platefulfront and the work-front. This male dominated relationship is shown in the play with Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora. This point is reflected throughout the play as Torvald dictates the scenery, takes center to the action, and directly causes character development. Th roughout the play, Noras actions be under the jurisdiction of her husband. Torvald gives her childish pet names like my belittled lark (994) or my squirrel (994) and regulates her every action. Even the family friend, Dr. Rank, knows that sweets are forbidden in the house because Torvald thinks they might ruin Noras teeth. This limitation is completely childish and Nora, like a child, sneaks sweets stub her husbands back. In addition Torvald doesnt allow Nora to keep in touch with her old friends, he mandates that she embroider rather than knit, he chooses her costume for the masquerade party, and he tells her what dance she is to perform at the party.
